In Kyushu, shochu is more popular than sake. However, people in Saga prefecture consume a larger amount of sake than that of shochu. Saga has a lot of famous sake breweries such as Gochouda and Amabuki. Komatsu-shuzo is one of the best sake breweries in Saga prefecture.
Komatsu-shuzo is located in the northern part of Saga and sells various kinds of sake under the brand name of Manrei and Miraikyo. Komatsu-shuzo is a very small sake brewery and produces only 60 Koku (10,800L). I bought Manrei Draft Super Dry Taste [Spring Version].
The sake is tokubetu-junmai-shu, which is brewed only using rice grains with the rice polishing percentage of 60% or less (30% or more of a rice grain is removed). Usually, sake is sterilized by heating twice. However, draft sake is never heat-sterilzed. As rice used for brewing sake, Omachi is used. Omachi is mainly cultivated in Okayama prefecture and has a rich and wild taste.
As soon as I opened the bottle, it has a slight peach-like aroma. Usually, sake brewed in Saga is sweet but the Manrei is dry and refreshing. I couldn't stop drinking it!! The Manrei is one of my favorites! You should buy and try one! You can buy one at Kanedai-saketen and you can also enjoy it at Saga-gura located in Haruyoshi, Fukuoka City.
